Something I have found a little tricky being a busy expat mother in the UAE is finding a one-stop-shop that caters to mummies, babies, and kids.
Yes, we have an abundance of specially catered stores spread across our vast and wonderful Malls. But here’s the thing… they usually cater either to women individually (with a small maternity selection on offer), OR babies OR kids. I genuinely find it hard to name any shops that cater to all three at once!
Enter Mamis – a beautiful store based in Abu Dhabi which does just that. Its added bonus? Well, it actually has some style-factor! Meaning fellow mamas leave with clothes just as gorgeous as their kids (anyone else find the parent : kids fashion ratio a little alarming?! Now heavily pregnant, I always seem to look like a bin-bag compared to my tot!)
From stylish maternity wear, to beautiful clothes perfect for the baby-breastfeeding days, to comfy and cute items for your lovely little bundle of joy, all the way up to gorgeous (and durable) items for busy tots and children. And lets not forget the excellent array of accessories, including breast-pumps, teething necklaces, beach-wear, ergonomic baby carriers, and more! There is something sweet for everyone (baby-wearing Dads included!)
Interested to learn more about the store, I caught up with the wonderful Yessika – the main mama behind Mamis to ask her some questions. You can also learn more about Mamis over on the website. (P.s. Hop on over to The Son And The Moon Facebook page for an exclusive competition to win a Manduca Carrier for you and your little one) x
What inspired you to open Mamis?
My friend who I met at antenatal classes 6 years ago had the idea of opening Mamis. We starting researching in Abu Dhabi what shops were available for nice fashionable maternity wear, breastfeeding bras, pyjamas and ergonomic baby carriers and found there was very little to offer!
Therefore, two years ago, we started researching for MUST have products during the pregnancy and breastfeeding years and attempted to bring all these brands under one roof – Mamis was born!
My friend and business partner recently moved on, so after one year of the venture, I am the main Mama behind Mamis.
I love what I do and love all the feedback I receive from people benefiting from the shop. I am always open to expanding the collection based on the needs of our lovely “Mamis”.
Tell us about some of the beautiful products that you stock?
Each product is carefully selected by myself. I look for products that I, as a mother of 3 children, would find useful, comfortable and fashionable.
With my recent pregnancy I had the opportunity to pretty much try all the maternity products myself. I loved looking glamorous with my big bump! Products such as leggings, long skirts, maternity tops, trousers successfully took me through my last office hours before going on maternity leave!
Currently I am testing our breastfeeding and baby carriers’ collection as my newest addition is 3 months old. Punch Melba from Cake Lingerie is my favourite bra, it is so comfortable and flattering.
As for breastfeeding tops, Mamis has several designs and prints, making the hard job easy when you are out and about. Most of our tops, dresses and nightwear can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding, making the purchase long lasting.
But Mamis does not stop at clothing for mummies! We have introduced a full range of JoJo Maman Bébé baby and kids clothing & accessories. My baby has been wearing beautiful embroidered onesies and hats that after several washes and a few accidents look as good as new.
Last but not least I would like to mention our collection of ergonomic baby carriers. Manduca takes you from newborn with the Manduca sling & Marsupi, up to toddler babywearing with the Manduca carrier. If you prefer wrapping, we have the woven wrap, ring slings, mei tai and wrap tai from Lennylamb with fabrics (cotton & bamboo) selected for the UAE weather. If you are looking for something for the beach and pool, we offer you the Tonga carrier or the aqua Bykay carrier. Really there is a carrier for everybody’s liking!
In all the products that Mamis stock, the focus is on the quality and practicality, with the best price possible being offered.
I like people to think of Mamis because of our great customer service and good quality products. There is no big name behind Mamis – I am just a mother trying to help and give advice to other mothers.
What is your current favourite item and why?
This is such a hard question to answer, I love everything in the shop! But if I have to pick only one I think I would have to choose the Manduca carrier – for me personally, it really has been my saviour!
For some reason my kids have always hated being left in a car seat and push chair. Like many babies, they just adore being held. But how to hold them whilst still having my hands free during supermarket trips, mall strolls, airports and site seeing? Manduca is the answer – it has allowed me to feed my son on the go so I could get other things done in the house or out and about.
He first got in the Manduca when he was 5 months old, and at almost 3 he still loves it. Though now it is time for his little sister to try the new collection and be close to her Mami!
Do you stock any products exclusively?
I strive to have the best products for mummy & baby under one roof, and where possible products that are new and needed in the UAE are exclusive to Mamis. We are currently the exclusive retailers of Mama I Ja maternity, Torelle maternity and kids clothes, Benefit Lingerie, and the Bykay, Tonga and the Manduca carriers.
What are your plans for the future?
I understand that the market changes all the time with more and more brands available. I love to receive feedback from fellow mothers, and I am more than happy to explore other brands and products that people would like to see in the UAE. In the meantime, there are some new additions such as water wipes, JoJo Maman Bébé kids, Medela, and BubbaChews products coming our way.
My current goal is to launch the Mamis online shop too!
How can people get to know Mamis more?
Mamis is located in Al Seed Village Mall, first floor, Abu Dhabi.
We are open every day from 10am to 10.30pm and extended to 11pm on Thursdays and Fridays.
If you like something just get in touch and we will arrange delivery for you until we get our Mamis online ready to rock!
